FREE STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE

How to register for the immigration court ECAS Portal

EOIR's Respondent Access Portal is for people handling their immigration court case without an attorney. It lets you view your case file, check your hearings, submit documents, and change your address online. Here is the summary; the full guide walks through every registration screen with real screenshots.

Is it for you?

The portal is for you if all three apply:

  • You are 18 or older.
  • Your case is in immigration court, not only an application with USCIS.
  • You have no attorney or accredited representative on your case.

If you have an attorney, your case is handled through your attorney's portal. Creating the account is optional: you can also file documents by mail or in person.

Before you start, have ready

  • Your A-Number

It has 9 digits and appears on your Notice to Appear or your hearing notices.

  • Your own email

One you check often. It will be your DOJ login and the email for your case.

  • Your identity documents

To verify your identity at the court: one from Group A or two from Group B. The full list is in the guide.

  • Your cell phone

To set up two-step verification when you activate your account.

Registration in three steps

1

Register online

On the EOIR website, open the Respondent Access Portal and choose "Register for an account." Select the Respondent account type, enter your details exactly as they appear on your ID, review, and submit. Save the confirmation.

2

Verify your identity at the court

Within the next 90 calendar days, take your documents to an immigration court or the Board of Immigration Appeals and tell the clerk you want to complete your registration. If you do not have the documents, you can do it before the judge on the day of your hearing.

3

Activate your account

Once the court verifies your identity, EOIR activates the account and emails you instructions to set up your phone. Sign in with the same email you used to register.

Three mistakes that hold you back

Entering a name that differs from your ID

Enter it exactly the same: if it does not match, verification can get complicated.

Letting the 90 days run out

Write down the deadline and go to the court as soon as you submit your request. If it expires, you start over.

Using someone else's email

Use an email that is only yours: it is your login and where your case mail arrives.

Watch out for fake sites: official government sites end in .gov, and registering for the portal is free.
